Is Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999) the first star wars?
i no its not like the first first but is it a remake of the original or is it continuing from the 1977 movies or when ever the last movies are

it is the first in order of the saga, yes. They are numbered in order.

there are 6 star wars movies – the orignial three are the last three (4, 5, 6) and the newest ones are a prologue to the original three. You can tell by the way they look by watching htem (but I recomend only watching the original three; so worth it.)

there are star wars fans out in the world that would shoot you for not knowing the answer haha

Technically, its the fourth movie to be released in the Star Wars franchise. however episode 1 is indeed the beginning of the saga; not a remake or a continuation. if you don’t really get star wars, i suggest watching all six movies starting with episode 1.

Episode 1 was the first movie in the TIMELINE of the movies, but the time-frame in which they are made went like this:
4 (A New Hope)
5 (The Empire Strikes Back)
6 (Return of the Jedi)
*16-year-hiatus*
1 (The Phantom Menace)
2 (Attack of the Clones)
3 (Revenge of the Sith)

So far, there have been no actual remakes- in 1997, Lucas added details and did some touch-ups to the original three (some people like them, some don’t). In 1999, he began the backstory to the originals- the backstory takes place when a generation before.

If you go from Anakin Skywalker’s age, this is a rough timeline of the movies.

1: 9 years old
2: 19/20 years
3: 22 years
4: 40/41 years
5: 44/45 years
6: 45/46 years old.

What is not:
Not a remake: it do not show again the story of Luke, Princess Leia, Darth Vader, Han Solo, etc.
Not a Sequel: / Not continuing: The story in Episode I does not ocurr after the events of the 1977 movie.

What it is: PREQUEL
In chronological order, it is the first movie, the movie with the earlier events of the saga, the chapter I (or Episode I) of the whole story. It is a prequel (a story that happens before) to the 1977 Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope.

In Episode I: Anakin Skywalker is a boy, ObiWan Kenobi is a young man.
In Episode IV: Anakin Skywalker (now known as Darth Vader) is an adult, and ObiWan Kenobi (also known as Ben Kenobi) is an old man.

It is like "The Hobbit" vs "The Lord of the Rings".
* The Hobbit is an story that happens before the events of LOTR, but the movie will be in the teathers after all the triology of LOTR who has already been completed.
* In "The Hobbit" instead of Frodo Baggins the story will center around his uncle Bilbo Baggins. It will show again Gandalf, Elrond and other characters or places mentioned in LOTR. Legolas and Gimli are not in the story but their respective fathers will be in.

It is not a remake of Star Wars. Its a Prequel. And it is the start of a whole new Saga. It will help you understand more of the Movie Star Wars and the others. It helps fill in why things got that way

No it is not a "remake" of the originals. The OT (Original Trilogy) is episodes 4 – 6 and were released from 1977 – 1983. The prequel movies, episodes 1 – 3, were released from 1999 – 2005 and they tell the back story to the OT. They show the fall of the Republic and the rise of the Empire … they also tell the story of Darth Vader … who he was, how he fell to the dark side and the reason why he was forced into the suit to live.

The simple fact is that the 6 movie saga that we have now bares very little resemblance to the story that Lucas started out with. As with many stories changes have affects on the rest of the story as a whole. When Lucas first wrote the story arc it was a massive 12 part epic. As time went by Lucas began making changes to make the story better, at least from his point of view. There were two major changes made that cut the number of episodes from 12 down to 6. The first change was to combine the characters of Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader into one. This change eliminated 3 of the episodes and left us with the fabled 9 episode story that you will hear many talk about. The first trilogy was to be about the rise and fall of Anakin Skywalker, the second trilogy was to be about the rise of Luke Skywalker and the redemption of Anakin Skywalker and the third trilogy was to be about the "other Skywalker" that Yoda mentions in ep 5. This is where the second major change happens. When writing the final duel between Luke & Vader in ep 6 Lucas got stumped on what he could have Vader say that would cause Luke to attack his father in a dark side fueled rage. To solve this problem he made Leia the "other Skywalker" and had Vader threaten her. This change eliminated the last trilogy leaving us with a 6 movie saga.

One of the other answers says that if you don’t know much about SW that you should watch the movies in the order of 1 – 6. No offense to that person but that is the absolute worst way to watch the movies for the first time. There are so many things in the prequel movies that would not make much sense without the knowledge gained by watching the OT first. Also, watching them 1 – 6 makes the story bombshells from ep 5 & 6 not seem to important even though they were the back bone of the entire storyline.

Another said that the OT movies have been kind of remade already. This actually is true in a few ways but what has been done to the movies is NOT a true remake with new actors etc. In 1997 Lucas re-released all 3 of the OT movies to theaters. For the most part all Lucas did was amp up the sound and picture quality of the movies. He did change a couple scenes and add a couple more but nothing that could really be called a true "remake". When the OT movies came out on DVD in 2004 Lucas had made a few more "tweaks" to the story. In the end most of the changes made work very well and tie the two trilogies together pretty good but there are two changes, "Who shot first", and "Anakin’s Force Ghost" that made fans go nuclear because they don not work at all, in fact they are a contradiction to the spirit of the story. Lucas knows this but is to suborn to change them back.

As for true remakes of the OT movies … there is not a single chance in hell that it will ever happen. Lucas owns everything to do with Star Wars and has made his wishes for the series known very clearly to all. He even has provisions in his Will that forbid anyone else from ever making more movies or remaking the ones that already exist.

May The Force Be With You …
