is the pope a hypocrite?
not necessarily aimed at benedict xvi, but there seems to be a strong contrast between jesus’s teachings of humbleness, "money is bad," etc. and the Pope’s big mansion castle thing, designer shoes, etc. If the pope was indiana jones in the last crusade movie, do you think he would have picked the big jewelly grail instead of the plain one?
I don’t think hypocrite is the right word. The papacy demonstrates the friction between idealism and realism. The papacy is trying to spread a spiritual message, but it still exists within the material world. In order for the papacy to gain the power it needed to minister to all of Christendom, it really needed to take on the trappings of a power center.
Quite frankly, the Bible sets impossible standards, especially if a religion is going to last long term. The message of the Bible was very much rooted in the idea that judgment would soon be upon us, so longer term goals weren’t so important. The papacy is in it for the long run, trying to save souls for as long as life remains on earth.

Oh, catholics aren’t as bad as protestants (americans).

The Pope doesn’t pay for anything, everything is donated to him. Not to mention that he doesnt wear designer shoes?
The ‘big mansion" is home to thousands of priests and it’s the capital of a coutnry- yes the vatican is its own country. It’s not the same as owning a big house when you have next to no bills to run the place. No electric company would dare send the pope a shut off notice, they would be scared

The Pope’s are men. Men as different from one to another as anyone. Therefore some were hypocrites some were not.

What big mansion castle thing and designer shoes? The pope lives in a 2 room apartment and his shoes were made by an Italian shoe maker, which is a long standing tradition of Italian shoe makers.
Sure, some are hypocrites. There were a few over 1000 years ago that could only be described as evil. But a hypocrite for the reasons you give? Certainly not.

I am catholic. I want the Pope dressed nicer than the Queen of England. I want big cathedrals. I don’t want a homeless dude for pope. I don’t want to go to church in a converted theater.

Gain some knowledge, lose your ignorance.
The Pope takes vow to poverty. The Pope never owns anything on his back. He has no materialistic possession. The Vatican houses more people than just the Pope.

The Pope does not own anything. Everything is provided to him is done by the Church through tithing and donations. In fact all Priest live moderate lifestyles because of their piousness and those that that take a vow of poverty have no luxuries. The Rectory that the Pope lives in houses many Priests inside. In fact the Roman Catholic Church restricted Priest to be married because of lordship issues that were brought up because when Priest were allowed to be married and when they died their inheritances (Church’s inheritance) would be passed on the the deceased Priest’s family (Wife, Sons and Daughters). Not to mention that their education also lead Priest to wealth and power.
Look at the Orthodoxy and Protestant churches. Their Pastors gain wealth through tithing and before they die it goes to their families. That’s right, what you give to your church is going into the hands of your Pastor’s family after they die.
