How do you get an IV to work again?
We just got our dog home from the hospital. He’s suppose to have an IV for the next few days but the vet said it would be better if he came home with an IV than staying in the hospital.
On the way home it stopped working. It’s not dripping at the top anymore. His nose is as dry as a bone again and putting presure on the gums of his teeth show he’s getting dehydrated again.
The vet said to take a seringe of fluid from the IV bag and push it back into the IV itself. We did that. It didn’t work.
If you’ve had experience with this, please tell me what to do?
Our Dog has cushings, a disease that is agrevated by stress and anxiety.
Unfortunatly he also has anxiety problems. We got him from a rescue agency at 17 months. In one of his previous 7 homes (he was passed around the extended family alot) he was beaten with a hammer until he was unconsciece and dying. A neice of the man who did it, took him to the vet. The vet refused to give the dog back to anybody in the extended family, and gave him to a rescue organization. He came to us afraid of hammers, vacume cleaners, fly swatters, the dark, loud noices, and several other things. We’ve gotten him used to some of those things but not all. The rest we’ve decided to just live with.
Anxiety produces Cortison. Cortison makes cushings worse. If Cortison levels get to high our dog could die.
He was at the hospital last night and was too anxious.
So he vet thought that our dog would get better faster at home, where he would have minamum anxiety.
suck some fluid out of the fluid bag with the syringe, kink the drip line just ABOVE the injection port and inject the fluid into the line, you should feel that the pressure is very hard and then releases, you have cleared the blockage, sometimes the fluid line can stop for other reasons like the dog has a bent leg or the line has kinked, if you still cant figure it out i suggest taking him back to the vet.
the nose is NOT an indication of hydration status, his gums are, they should be nice and moist like ours

Call the Vet, or take him back to the Vet. Doesn’t sound like he was ready to come home.

True words, marci. I agree. Take him back immediatley.

It needs to be reinserted by the animal doctor! The IV might have been dislodged!

I give my cat subcutaneous fluids all the time (difference being it’s injected under the skin… IV means in a vein) and I’m not sure how different they are, but sometimes when I’m doing her fluids, the needle will butt up against her skin or muscle or whatever and blocks the flow. Gently moving the needle a little bit is usually all I need to get it going again. If it’s not taped to her fur or something, you can try pulling the needle out a tiny bit (not all the way) to see if it’s blocked against something.

Sorry but there is not much to do at this time. If the catheter is clotted then it typically has to be changed out. Periodic flushing usually helps prevent this. Do not try to force it, as it may blow, or force a clot down the blood stream.
Contact your vet or go to an emergency clinic and let them help you out. Even better, let the vet keep the dog until he no longer needs the IV. I’m surprised he even left the dog go home with the IV.
